TECHNICAL DIRECTOR / ENGINEERING MANAGER

Location: Lagos

Reporting to: Managing Director

Company: Providing engineering and design services required for the implementation of Oil and Gas related projects.

Function:

  • Promoting communication and team spirit within the department, as well as ensuring adequate and regular flow of information to the employees and vice-versa, and organizing regular meetings; ensuring adherence to the principles of internal and external communication.
  • Promoting independent action and entrepreneurial thinking of personnel
  • Ensuring that each employee accurately knows what his/her tasks and responsibilities are
  • Awareness of Company’s Quality Policy.
  • Responsible for supervising all engineers, technicians, drafters.
  • Required to direct, review, coordinate and approve various engineering activities where applicable for various projects within the company.
  • Supervision and coordination of all engineering managers and their required tasks (as applicable)
  • Knowing what specialist knowledge and competency each engineer possess thereby ensuring that there is adequate expertise to fulfil responsibilities to client.
  • Intervening in due time if an employee is unable to (fully) perform the tasks assigned to him on a project.
  • Required to support the management of the company in the development of polices, standards and procedures for the engineering and technical work performed within the company.
  • Required to support the Acquisition unit in analyzing of proposal bid and tenders considered feasible to management for consideration as plausible venture for the company to undertake.
  • Coordinate production of project and engineering man-hour estimates to support the Business Development Department.
  • Responsible for keeping up with industry changes and trends which may affect quality of engineering.
  • Define Staffing Requirements based on project demands and issue personnel requests to HR, including requests to interview the potential candidates.
  • Interview potential candidates and take decisions whether the potential candidates are fit for purpose or not.
  • Initiating the drawing up of the required conditions for the secondment of an employee.
  • Supporting the human resources officer in preparing for the departure of an employee.
  • Organizing and conducting departmental meetings and attending further periodic management meetings
  • Conducting staff appraisal interviews with the employees as well as continued and regular communication with employees throughout the year
  • Promoting the continuing education of personnel (courses, seminars, conferences, fairs).
  • Promoting and accepting suggestions for improvement from employees, forwarding them to the IMS officer of the company, reviewing and implementing them (provided that they only concern the respective department), or forwarding them to senior management (provided that the entire company is affected)
  • Ensuring the quality of the project work of an employee, even if he/she reports to a project manager from another department in the course of interdisciplinary project cooperation
  • Providing technical support to the best of abilities to the project managers
  • Contributing to the utilization of resources, the guidelines for the project execution, and project budget in the course of the project preparation
  • Contributing to the review of design documents .
  • Reviewing the relevance of errors or suggestions for improvements, establishing appropriate measures and reviewing their effectiveness.
  • Responsible for assigning tasks, directing and evaluating work of engineers in line with the company performance evaluation model.
  • Required to support all project managers, where applicable, in performance management reviews and oversee the development and maintenance of staff competency.
  • To perform all tasks/activities relevant to the company, assigned by the Management as required.
  • Be aware of and obey the Company Quality rules & perform the activities required by relevant procedures on these issues.
  • Attend all the company-organized training courses when invited.

Managerial Competency Requirements

  • Able to perform functions of planning, organizing and coordinate efforts of entire engineering team.
  • Competent to distribute work and responsibilities to various disciplines.
  • Proactive in engaging management on all relevant issues within a project and the company.
  • Ability to take decisions and to early identify project scope deviations and potential delays in execution and to introduce mitigation measures to compensate.
  • Early recognition, registration, and notification to Project Manager of non-contractual services.
  • Identify and report to Project Manager all events, requests, particularly in relation to possible contractual consequences.
  • Establish a working atmosphere of mutual respect within all Engineering Departments.
  • Highest level of self-organization and leadership. Able to delegate responsibilities to various engineering disciplines.
  • Responsible for overseeing the activities of new engineers within the company, in addition to trainees and engineering interns. Required to ensure the environment for them being mentored and trained by the Lead and Senior Engineers.

Managerial Experience

  • Minimum 7 years of managerial experience.

Technical Experience

  • Minimum cognate experience of 18 years in the relevant sector with 5 years’ experience as a Lead Engineer in an engineering discipline.

Educational Qualifications

  • Minimum Qualification B. Sc. In an Engineering Discipline. A Master’s Degree in an Engineering Discipline or an MBA would be a considerable advantage

Linguistic Skills

  • Excellent written and spoken English is mandatory. German advantageous.

Additional Competency Requirements

  • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, AutoCAD, MS Project.
  • Excellent knowledge on Document Control.
  • Knowledge of basic Human Resources Management will be an added advantage.
